How Often Should You Shock Your Pool?

What Is Pool Shocking? Shocking your pool means adding extra chlorine (or other special chemicals) to kill germs, algae, and other things that can make your pool dirty or unsafe. When you shock your pool, you raise the chlorine level a lot so it can clean the water really well. Just because your pool smells like chlorine doesn’t mean it’s clean. A clean pool shouldn’t have a strong smell!

When Should You Shock Your Pool?

Here are some good times to shock your pool:
  1. When you see algae growing.
  2. When your pool has almost no chlorine left.
  3. When the number on your test kit says there are too many chloramines (over 0.5 ppm).
Most pool owners shock their pool about every two weeks during swimming season. If your test shows the chlorine is outside the safe range (1-3 ppm), you should shock the pool.

Other Good Times to Shock Your Pool:

1) At the start of the season: Clean and shock your pool before anyone swims after winter. Algae may have grown while it was closed.
2) After a pool party: More swimmers mean more germs. Shock your pool after lots of people use it.
3) After storms: Rain and wind can bring dirt and leaves into your pool. Clean it and shock it to make the water safe again.
4) Hot, sunny days: When it’s really hot and sunny, your pool might need shocking to get rid of germs that can grow in the heat.
5) When closing your pool: Shock the pool before closing it for winter to keep it clean until next year.
Types of Chlorine:
There are different types of chlorine in your pool:
  1. Free chlorine: This is the good chlorine that keeps your pool clean.
  2. Combined chlorine: This is chlorine that has already cleaned stuff and needs to be removed.
  3. Total chlorine: This is all the chlorine in your pool added together.

How to Shock Your Pool (Step-by-Step):

  1. Uncover your pool, skim out leaves and debris, vacuum, and brush the sides and bottom.
  2. Make sure the pH balance in your pool is normal.
  3. Put on goggles, gloves, and old clothes to protect yourself.
  4. Mix the pool shock in a big bucket of pool water (about five gallons) and stir.
  5. Make sure the pool pump is running.
  6. Pour the mixed shock into your pool, walking around the edges.
  7. Let the pump run for about 6 hours, then test your water.
  8. When the free chlorine level is between 1 and 3 ppm, it’s safe to swim again!
Shocking your pool is easier than it sounds and will keep your water safe and fresh. Now you know when and how to do it—happy swimming!
